I found your blog by way of reading your comment on 2DT's blog.

I loved Sword of the Stranger, for exactly the reason you mention: the execution is perfect. I also loved its understated quality. It's not a complicated story (and the characters are even less so ;) - but it's just perfectly done.

Comment on The Live-Action Paradigm by vendredi

@animekritik - that's the funny thing, and part of why I hesitate to label this paradigm as "live action": generally, I don't watch anything live-action unless there is some strong sort of visual component. Good examples from film might include stuff like 300, The Spirit, or Pan's Labryinth.

A great deal of what i watch is decided on purely visual conceit most of the time (part of the reason for this is that I am a very quick reader - in many cases i can finish a book within the span of a movie or two, so my concern is more for what sort of different things a visual production can bring).

Consequently, this category may be more an aesthetic one. I certainly can contend that each of these series certainly has a similar vibe; or at very least, they're a far cry from something more "run-of-the-mill": any shounen anime, "standard" mecha fare such as Gundam 00 or Macross Frontier, or even some action anime such as CANAAN.

But then again, maybe all I'm noticing are common structures in anime that try for a "realistic" look. It's interesting you mention that it has no appeal for you though; nearly the reverse is true for me. Designs like the above make me definitely sit up and notice - all the more so now because they're so rare (with the advent of that particular "moe" look).

@Ghostlightning - Haven't been following it, but the premise of 8.0 does sound like it would work in a live-action format. The aesthetic isn't exactly "realistic" maybe in comparison to some of the above examples, but perhaps that points to some tension in the trend as I've defined it - as I point out above to animekritik, I'm not sure exactly if I'm noticing a genre or an aesthetic category.

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0... I could tell it'd be the case when I watched the first episode again... with my mother. She likes it, and will watch since I gave her all the episodes.

I guess the question would then be, how about live-action shows? Which sort do you like? Do you, ironically, prefer ones that give off an animeish vibe?

I myself get turned off by too realistic character designs. I honestly can't give you an explanation as to why, though.

AHHA, the last point brings out an important response to a comment I saw about Nadeko being called "fat" over at Shin's blog. In this case, your musings are very interesting indeed.

By the way you were looking for the English word of "totems" instead of using "kami's". Totems are the same here. Certainly, I was hoping that someone would cover the part regarding the snake and the religion, and I am glad you did. I will definitely be including this in my look at episode 09.

This is also why late posts are good. :p

I stopped at episode 6 of the Les Miserable anime because no new episodes were being subbed...I wanted to learn more about the story through all 52 episodes but yeah. Aoi-Anime recently started subbing where the other subbers left off and I am wondering if I should try and get all the releases again and finish it, since Les Miserable has a fine story from what I remember reading from Wiki.

EastwoodDC is right. FASA got the rights to use the designs for their original mechs from the artist who did Macross himself (back when Battletech was called Battledroids). Licensing issues, rights, and whatnot became a problem sometime later, so FASA dropped those designs for something completely original. As of about a week or two ago, the original designs that haven't been seen since 1985 have been re-licensed and are being re-released with the newest iterations of the Battletech line in the coming months.
